Wheatfield prison, located in Clondalkin West Dublin, was in chronic lack of space and therefore built a new wing to the existing building. In the prison housing over 200 prisoners fire safety is an important issue. Williaam Cox Ireland Ltd., a leading specialist in smoke and heat ventilation in Ireland, was responsible for the fire safety.
In a prison with so many people it is essential that people can be evacuated safely in case of fire. Therefore the fire certificate prescribed a smoke and heat ventilation system that makes sure that smoke is discharged quickly. This enables people to escape safely and confines the size of a fire so that the fire department can extinguish the fire in an efficient manner.
Mr. David Coates, Sales Manager at Williaam Cox: “We convinced the prison service and architect that our vents met all the relevant regulations. The fact that the vents can be used for day-to-day ventilation added attraction for our client”.
Solution
David Coates: “For the evacuation of smoke and hot air, we integrated 51 translucent louvered ventilators (type Eura) in the glazed rooflights. In the walls we applied 8 translucent louvered systems type Estra for air inlet. We obtained our products from our partner Brakel in the Netherlands. Brakel always provides us with high quality products and the necessary relevant technical information, e.g. regarding wind and snow loads and test certificates.
Our client is very happy with the result. The new prison wing has safe and pleasant living conditions (due to daily ventilation).”
