Powerdel: Giant in Malaysia

Powerdel vouches for the fire safety of another two branches of Giant in Malaysia

Powerdel, Brakel’s partner in Malaysia, is to supply smoke & heat extraction systems for two new branches of Giant megastore – one in Kuching and one in Sibu. Powerdel was previously responsible for the installation of high quality smoke & heat extraction systems at more than ten other Giant branches. Daniel Lim, Director of Powerdel Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur, explains about his firm’s partnership with Brakel, while also touching upon the quality of the products, certification and logistics.

Smoke and heat extraction at Giant megastores
Powerdel previously fitted Brakel natural smoke & heat extraction vents, comprising largely Euras and Duo Thermas, at branches including Giant Sri Kembangan, Giant Kijal, Giant Penang, Giant Sandakan, Giant Sri Manjung, Giant Kinrara, Giant Banting and Giant Putra Heights.

Smart concept of system and logistics
Daniel Lim: ‘We developed a smart concept for the Giant megastores on the basis of these projects – in which the Brakel ventilators have already adequately proven their functionality and sustainability. It is pretty much a question of standardisation and a tried and tested model, which focuses not only on the system itself, but also efficient logistics. This has enabled us to reduce the costs of transportation from the Netherlands to Port Klang in Malaysia to just 5% of the value of the contract. Transport is carried out using sea containers, while the dimensions of the equipment are carefully taken into consideration in advance, to ensure that the pallets are stacked in the most practical manner.’ In comparison: despite the vast distance from the factory in the Netherlands to the construction site in Malaysia (even the most direct route from the Netherlands to Malaysia is over 10,000 km) the total costs for the shipment of a full 40 ft. container via the ports of Rotterdam and Port Klang are comparable to those for a full lorry load (road haulage) to a destination in central France, for example.’

High quality systems with the appropriate certification
Daniel Lim continues: ‘The Brakel ventilators operate faultlessly, are easy to install and connect, and require very little maintenance apart from the statutory annual inspection. The quality of the materials used is reflected by the fact that the systems weigh approx. 50% more than rival products. The aluminium used is simply far superior, which explains why no hinging problems have yet been encountered with Brakel ventilators. The ventilators can nevertheless be easily handled by two fitters, while standard bases can also be used. Nor do any special reinforcing elements need to be fitted. The degree of watertightness is also an important feature, as we experience storms of quite considerable magnitude here in Malaysia. Everyone has almost certainly heard of the tropical rainfall we regularly have. The Euras and Duo Thermas nevertheless withstand these ‘practical tests’ time after time. As far as regulations go, the European (BS)-EN12101 standard is accepted here, while the CE certification of the ventilators is an important item to inspection authorities.’

Partners since 2004
Daniel Lim , operating under the name Powerdel, and Brakel, have been mutually satisfied partners since as early as 2004. ‘It is rather a pity that we are located so far from one another, as this tends to restrict contact to communicating by email and telephone, while both firm’s teams would like to see one another more frequently,’ Daniel Lim admits in closing.
